This is such a perfect setting for a game. Is the idea to eventually determine who stole the loot, or let the versions of the story ride forever?

You could eventually determine who stole the loot, but the scene will loop anyway (and it might be a different culprit next time around).
In my version of things, you just loop endlessly until reality gets too broken to continue, but that's just my take on it :)
